Mesothelioma Treatments and Mesothelioma Research: Chemotherapy Single Agent
Chemotherapy: Single Agent

Mesothelioma is quite resistant to drugs with the
majority of single chemotherapeutic agents not
only having significant toxicities but also
showing response rates below 20%.

There is no single drug that appears to have an impact
on overall survival, the single agents listed here
suggest they are the most active against
mesothelioma:
  • 5-fluorouracil,
  • methotrexate (high dose),
  • timetrexate,
  • doxorubicin,
  • epirubicin,
  • cyclophosphamide,
  • ifosfamide,
  • mitomycin C,
  • Platinol® (cisplatin),
  • interferon, and
  • Alimta®.
Vinorelbine has also been suggested as providing relief of
symptoms with low toxicity.

Cisplatin is the widely established measure mesothelioma
single agent treatment but Alimta® (pemetrexed) has
been hailed as a "major step forward in the treatment of
mesothelioma" having a reported response rate of 16%
when evaluated as a single agent drug in a phase II trial
in the United States, Italy and Germany.
