Chemotherapy: Combination
Research has suggested that combinations
of various drugs are more active than
single agent treatments.
Mesothelioma patients have appeared to have some
improvement with oxaliplatin and Raltitrexed,
gemcitabine (either alone or with cisplatin) and
vinorelbine.
There has been much research in to Alimta and
Platinol® (cisplatin) which appear to be the
most active combination.
In a 1999-2001 study 456 mesothelioma patients
were treated with the Alimta and Platinol®
(cisplatin) combination or cisplatin as a lone
agent.
The combination recipients lived longer, saw a
longer time span before the cancer progressed
and improved quality of life and symptom relief.
New agents and combinations of agents are being
investigated - notably Gemzar® to Alimta® and
cisplatin and gemcitabine.
Even where chemotherapy disappoints the first
time around research is being undertaken to find
"second line chemotherapy" regimens.
