Mesothelioma Treatments and Mesothelioma Research: Pain Management
Pain Management

A very common characteristic of mesothelioma is
pain. As mesothelioma cancer progresses so does
the chronic pain associated with it - and most
disturbingly for many people with mesothelioma
it can remain unresponsive to traditional pain
management.

Mesothelioma pain therefore represents a significant issue for
patients and their medical team.

Mild pain or niggling discomfort in the back or chest for the
mesothelioma patient gives way to increasing discomfort and
pain. The treatments of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation
we have listed previously try to halt the progress of the disease
and consequent pain but these treatments bring with them their
own pain.

Over time the range of pain relief treatments has expanded and
now includes treatments as diverse as implanting pain relieving
devices at the root of the pain and delivering drugs
intraspinally (inside of the dural membrane of the spinal cord).

To achieve the best degree of pain relief while keeping any side
effects under control each patient's pain management program
needs to be personalized and continuously updated to reflect
changes in the stage of the mesothelioma cancer.
