Photodynamic Therapy
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is still very much in the research field with results so far suggesting, at most, only minor benefit.
PDT works by injecting a non-toxic photosensitizer drug that within a day or two leave healthy cells. Before the drug is excreted from the mesothelioma affected cells a laser light is applied which activates the photoactive drug so it can destroy the affected cell.
Through this process the healthy cells have a less chance of being harmed by the cancer fighting drug.
Because light can only penetrate so far PDT is generally only used on outward areas of the body. For this reason PDT has been tested during surgery when the laser has a better chance of reaching affected areas.
The advent of more advanced photosensitizers might mean a better success rate for photodynamic therapy.
