Immunotherapy
The body can distinguish cancerous cells and eliminate them but unfortunately for some cancers such as mesothelioma the body sees these cells as ordinary ones.
Immunotherapy uses biological response modifiers (BRMs) to try and 'retrain' the body's own natural immune defense systems to attack mesothelioma cells.
This 'immune response' to the cancerous cells aims to stop further growth and prevent mesothelioma changing a healthy cell in to a cancerous one.
BRMs can be either artificial or made naturally in the body and incorporate cancer vaccines, tumor necrosis factors, interferons, monoclonal antibodies and interleukins.
Research suggests that in early stage mesothelioma there is substantial reduction in tumor size but greater research is needed to determine efficacy in patients with more advanced mesothelioma.
