For mesothelioma brachytherapy the aim is to deliver beneficial short range radioactive substances at or very close to the mesothelioma affected area during surgery - "Intraoperative Radiation Therapy" (IORT).
During surgery mesothelioma affected areas that cannot be removed are identified and a custom-made pliable absorbent mesh with radioactive iodine seeds is stitched to those areas. The radioactive seeds in the implant deliver their radiation over several months.
Although the implant insertion should not add to surgery time it has been found that this was not the case in some procedures and that in those cases there was enhanced complications.
It is normal in at least one major mesothelioma treatment center to make available a brachytherapy for every suitable patient with its use determined during actual surgery.
