Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) is a fresh innovation in advanced radiation oncology.
Using computer controlled x-ray
machines radiation is delivered to
a tumor (or part of a tumor) that
could not be done with traditional
methods.
Using computed tomography (CT)
images the radiation can match the
3-dimensional structure of the tumor
by changing the beam - this results
in the affected area being treated
while leaving the healthy areas
alone.
Early data has suggested that there
have been major improvements in
local mesothelioma recurrences
while toxicity problems have
lessened even where radiation
doses have not been increased.
